HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Erskine's defense dominated the open quarter, forcing a three-and-out on the game's opening drive and then
Caleb Gleason recovered a fumble on the Cavaliers' next drive.
Kevon Catoe cashed in the short field with a 1-yard touchdown run to open the scoring. The Fleet defense continued to impose its will in the opening period and
West Hiller added a field goal as Erskine led 10-0 after the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
Both defenses were in control in the second quarter, but UVA Wise got a safety on a blocked punt and found the endzone in the closing minutes of the first half. The Fleet stopped the Cavaliers on the ensuing two-point attempt and held a narrow 10-8 lead at the break.
Third Quarter:
UVA Wise scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter, opening up a 21-10 lead with about 5 minutes remaining in the quarter.
West Hiller connected on a 37-yard field goal to trim the deficit to 21-13, making it a one-score game heading into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
The Fleet had two offensive possessions early in the fourth quarter with a chance to get closer and even tie the game but were unable to score. UVA Wise then regained its two-possession lead on a 28-yard touchdown run with under 9 minutes remaining. The Fleet moved the ball into Cavaliers' territory but turned the ball over on downs with just 3:08 to go in the game. UVA Wise sulked away the final minutes as they came from behind to defeat Erskine, 28-13.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine continues conference play on the road with a tall test against Tusculum University (7-1, 5-1 SAC) next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. That will be the Fleet's first trip to Tusculum; the Pioneers won at Erskine back in March 2021, during Erskine's first football season in 70 years.
