HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
A game that was originally scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, moved to Friday at 2:00 p.m. earlier in the week before being pushed back to Saturday at 2:00 p.m. due to the ongoing Hurricane Ian, Wingate did not appear to miss a beat, finishing their opening drive with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs added a touchdown on their next drive and led 10-0 after the opening frame.
Second Quarter:
Wingate scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and their defense stifled Erskine's attack, as the visitors led 24-0 at the halftime break.Â
Third Quarter:
The Fleet got the ball on the first drive of the second half and picked up a first down on a 12-yard reception from
Malory Pinkney, but Erskine was forced to punt. Wingate found the endzone on its first possession of the second half, extending its lead to 31-0.
Austin Parker took over at quarterback for the Fleet, and provided a boost with his legs on 3rd down in his first drive. Staring at a 3rd and 11, Parker took off on a designed QB draw and outran every Bulldogs defender down the left sideline, taking it 78 yards to the endzone and getting the Fleet on the board, 31-7. Erskine's defense forced a punt on the ensuing drive but the offense was unable to capitalize as the game headed into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
The Erskine defense got a fourth-down stop halfway through the fourth quarter, but Wingate's defense proved to be too much as they saw out a 31-7 victory.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine stays at home as they wrap up a four-game gauntlet to open SAC play against Mars Hill University (2-2, 2-1 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at J.W. Babb Stadium.
