Faith Wright picked up a dramatic three-set win at #4 singles, breaking a 3-3 match tie to propel Erskine past Mount Olive, clinching the Conference Carolinas title on Sunday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center. Wright dropped the first set to Mount Olive's Ece Yuksel, 6-4 but rallied in the next two sets, defeating Yuksel, 6-3, 6-1 to give Erskine's its first Conference Carolinas title in four years.
The Fleet got off to a thrilling start, winning the doubles point in dramatic fashion. Wright teamed with sophomore
Luize Valtere for an easy 6-0 win at #2 doubles but the drama came at #3 doubles. Freshman duo
Czarina Aguirre and
Lana Vukovic outdueled UMO's #3 doubles team, 7-6 in a tiebreaker, winning the tiebreaker, 7-4. The doubles point proved crucial after Valtere rolled past Nele Weber, 6-3, 6-0, at #3 singles and freshman
Emma Bentz rallied past Lisa Voloshyna at #1 singles, 2-6, 7-6,6-0. The stage was then set for Wright's heroics to get the clinching 4th point and earn her the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Valtere and Bentz joined Wright on the All-Tournament Team.
Erskine earned the automatic qualifying berth into the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament and will await the release of the bracket for date and location.
