THE SERIES
Erskine extended its record against the Mountain Lions to 4-1 all-time with a sweep of a doubleheader today.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1:Â Erskine starter
Hannah Houge and Concord starter Laura Thompson exchanged zeroes through the first four innings, as each team was held to just one hit through the first four frames. Houge retired the side in order in the top of the fifth before the Fleet offense finally broke through. A pair of walks sandwiched between a
Kelci Brown single set up the bases load for
Shi Cain. Cain drew a bases loaded walk to break the deadlock. Two batters later
Parker Birch drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and a
Kyndall Chandler RBI single capped a three-run fifth inning for Erskine. Concord got a run back in the sixth inning, but that was all as Erskine took Game 1 by a score of 3-1.
GAME 2:Â The Fleet's offense got off to a much better start in Game 2. After
Chloe Hamilton retired the side in order in the top of the first, it was Cain who opened the scoring again for Erskine, this time with a towering two-run home run to straightaway right field. Hamilton was replaced during the third inning by Houge, but a caught stealing and a strikeout maintained the Fleet's 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the third, a Cain walk, and a Birch single set the stage for
Haley Knox, who extended Erskine's lead to 3-0 with a run-scoring single.
Kyleigh Roland followed with a three-run home run that broke the game open, 6-0. Concord scored twice in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2, but the Fleet got a run back in the bottom half on a Cain RBI single. The Mountain Lions scored again in the seventh, but Houge closed the door, earning her second win of the day.
THE PLAYER
GAME 1:Â Hannah Houge threw a complete game, allowing just three hits and one run, while striking out nine batters.
GAME 2:Â Shi Cain was 1-2 with three RBIs and a run scored, including a two-run home run in the first inning to open the scoring.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Fleet have the weekend off, but continue their 18-game home stretch with a doubleheader against Augusta University (3-7) next Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
Â
The Jaguars hold a slim 8-7 lead in the all-time series, but Erskine swept Augusta in a doubleheader back in April 2019 and did not allow a run in either game.
