Erskine Men's Basketball | Fleet fall against Southern Wesleyan in Home Finale

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's basketball team (2-12, 2-12 CC) was defeated 89-72 by Southern Wesleyan University (7-4, 7-4 CC) in Belk Arena on Monday night.

THE SERIES
Despite the win tonight, Erskine still holds a 10-5 lead in the series. The Fleet won 10 of 11 in the series, but the Warriors have now won three straight meetings in the series.

THE GAME
The Fleet came flying out the gates, making their first four shots and taking a quick 11-2 lead. Uzziah Dawkins scored the next five points for Erskine to get the Fleet to the largest lead of their night at 16-5. Southern Wesleyan slowly began mounting a comeback before taking their first lead of the game with 9:03 remaining in the half. The Fleet answered with six unanswered on a Rod Culver triple and a Sterling Benjamin and-one. The lead changed hands multiple times in the final minutes of the half, but a 6-0 Warriors run to close the first half gave Southern Wesleyan a 44-40 lead at the break. The Warriors built on their lead to start the second half, extending it out to 58-47 with 15:56 remaining in the game. Erskine cut the deficit to six, but the Warriors rattled off a 15-1 run to take a 75-55 lead and put the game beyond reach. Southern Wesleyan continued adding on before a 9-0 Erskine run to end the game ended an 89-72 Warriors win.

THE PLAYER
Uzziah Dawkins scored a game-high 18 points for Erskine on 7-8 shooting from the field and was 3-4 from the free throw line. Dawkins also grabbed two rebounds, tallied two assists and a steal in the loss.

THE TEAM
Erskine shot 26-61 (42.6%) from the field and were 10-30 (33.3%) from 3-point range. The Fleet were 10-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line. Erskine outscored Southern Wesleyan 13 to three on second chance points, but the Warriors hit 14 threes in 29 attempts (48.3%).

WHAT'S NEXT?
With the loss tonight, Erskine is eliminated from contention for a spot in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Tournament. The Fleet's next game is Thursday night at Southern Wesleyan (7-4, 7-4 CC) at 7:00 p.m.
