DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine College men's basketball team (2-11, 2-11 CC) lost 89-82 to Chowan University (3-7, 3-7 CC) in Belk Arena on Saturday afternoon.

THE SERIES
With the win tonight, Chowan gets its first victory over the Fleet. The Hawks joined the league in the 2019-20 season, and the Fleet swept the season last year.

THE GAME
Chowan scored the first five points of the game, and held a throughout the entire first half. Erskine was able to withstand some Warriors runs, and an Emandi Brooks layup got Erskine within a point at 31-30. But, the Hawks responded with a 13-2 run before a Justin Morton three right before the half cut the Chowan lead to 44-35 going into the break. The Fleet used that momentum to go on a 12-1 run to open the second half and take their first lead of the game at 47-46. But, again the Hawks had the answer again, this time with a mini 6-0 run to retake the lead. And the Hawks held that lead for the remainder of the game. Erskine got as close as eight points after a Jalen Miller layup to make it a 69-61 game with 6:37 to go, but that was as close as the Fleet got as Chowan pulled away late en route to an 87-72 win.  

THE PLAYER
Justin Morton scored a career-high 23 points on 8-16 shooting and was 5-10 from beyond the arc. Morton also tallied a pair of rebounds and had two steals.

THE TEAM
Erskine shot 26-71 (36.6%) from the field and were 7-24 (29.2%) from 3-point range. The Fleet were 13-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line. Erskine outscored Chowan to 23 to 11 on points in transition, but the Hawks shot 54.6% from the field

WHAT'S NEXT?
Erskine wraps up its 2021 home slate against Southern Wesleyan (6-4, 6-4) on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. This game is a makeup from an originally scheduled game back in January that was postponed due to COVID concerns. 

The Fleet lead the all-time series 10-4 against Southern Wesleyan, but the Warriors have won the last two meetings between the teams.
