Erskine Men's Volleyball | Fleet Pick Up First Conference Win over Lees-McRae

DUE WEST, S.C.  – The Erskine College men's volleyball team (4-3, 1-1 CC) picked up its first conference win over Lees-McRae College (0-4, 0-1 CC) in four sets, 25-18, 27-25, 25-11, 25-12, in Belk Arena on Wednesday night.

THE SERIES
The Fleet continued their dominance in the all-time series with the Bobcats and now lead 13-3 all-time. In fact, Erskine has now won the last four contests against Lees-McRae.


THE MATCH
Set 1: With both teams seeking their first conference win, the Fleet attack came prepared. Erskine jumped out to the early 7-2 lead. Although the Bobcats managed to tie the set at 12-12, LMC could never push ahead. A late 6-0 run by Erskine put the set out of reach and Erskine went on to win the opening set 25-18.

 
Set 2: In familiar territory to start the second set, the Fleet led 7-3. A run of 7-2 by LMC put the visitors up 10-9. The set was tied at 22-22 before the Bobcats forced match point. The Fleet were able to extend the set, but conceded the set 27-25.

 

Set 3: Erskine wasted little time gaining control of the third set. The hosts were quickly out in front 11-4 and a pair of 3-0 runs and a 5-0 late gave the Fleet a 25-11 set win.

 

Set 4: Both sides traded points in the early stages of the fourth and final set. The difference in this one, which gave the Fleet the set and match victory was another 5-0 run to create a 16-9 advantage for Erskine. A kill and then a service ace handed the Fleet the 25-12 win the fourth set.


THE PLAYER
Jacob Whyte earned the double double with a team-high 18 kills to pair with his 11 digs. On the night, Whyte hit .517 (18 K / 3 E / 29 TA).

 
THE TEAM
Erskine hit .290 (46 K / 74 E / 100 TA) in the match. The Fleet produced 16 aces, nine blocks and 36 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Fleet take a day off before hosting King University (4-3, 1-1 CC) on Friday evening.
 

The matchup with the Tornado is set for 7:30 p.m. King have won the last two meetings, though the Fleet lead the all-time series 9-7.
