Flying Fleet baseball swept Southern Wesleyan in a Conference Carolinas three-game series on Friday and Saturday afternoon. The Fleet took Friday's game 13-2 and both games on Saturday 2-1 and 11-7.
Game 1 (FRI):
Gregory Sanders led the Fleet in game one of the series against Southern Wesleyan. Sanders hit The Cycle, earning a single, double, triple, and home run throughout the course of the game. Sanders' double came on his first at bat in the bottom of the first inning. A single from Yniesta would bring him home, and the Fleet would go on to earn two additional runs in the first inning. His single came in the second inning where he managed to advance all the way to third base before a single from
Livan Reinoso would bring him in for another run. Three more runs were added to the Fleet's score in the second inning before SWU would manage to close out the inning. After Randolph would bring in Bochino for a run on a sacrifice fly, Sanders earned his home run in the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Sanders completed The Cycle with a triple to right center field. The fourth inning saw two more runs for the Fleet, and Erskine would take the game 13-2. Sanders hit an impressive 4-4 on the day, earning three runs for the Fleet and one RBI.
Drew Yniesta also added three runs and went 3-5.
Zach Carter tallied three RBIs and went 2-4.
Game 2 (SAT): The second game of the series was a little slower for the Fleet. SWU managed to out hit the Fleet, with SWU earning seven hits on the game and the Fleet just five, but Erskine was able to bring in more runners and won the game 2-1. The first hit for the Fleet didn't come until the bottom of the third when Sanders would hit a double to right field. Sanders got caught stealing third base, and the score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning. A double to left field from
Drew Yniesta would bring Sanders in for the first run of the game, and the Fleet would take a 1-0 lead after the fifth. SWU tied the score in the top of the seventh, but the bottom of the inning saw Erskine reclaim their lead.
Asher Smith started off with a double to left field. Sanders and Yniesta were intentionally walked, giving the Fleet runners on all three bases. The SWU pitcher walked the next batter, giving the Fleet their second and final run of the game.
Game 3 (SAT): SWU was first on the board first in the third game of the series where they would post one run in the top of the first inning. Up 1-0, SWU would give up the lead in the bottom of the first when an error from the short stop would bring in two Fleet runners. SWU tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third, but five runs from the Fleet in the bottom of the fifth would give Erskine a commanding lead. A double down right field from Carter would bring in their first run of the fifth inning. Randolph hit a single that brought in D. Reinoso. A sacrifice fly from Bochino brought in
Trevor Lesane, and Fox hit a single to center field to bring in Randolph The bottom of the eighth saw four more runs for the Fleet, and Erskine would take the game 11-7.
Jaisen Randolph hit 2-4 with two RBIs, and
Cal Bochino earned another two RBIs for the Fleet.
The Fleet will step out of conference and take on Mars Hill on Tuesday, March 10, in a single game at Grier Field.
