Fleet softball traveled to Belmont, NC, to take on Conference Carolina's opponent Belmont Abbey in a double header on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders took the first game 3-2 and the second game 1-0.
Game 1: The first inning for the Fleet saw a single from Birch up the middle. She was able to advance to second when Cain walked, but the Crusaders closed out the inning before the Fleet could bring in either of their runners. Belmont Abbey was first on the board with a run in the bottom of the first inning taking a 1-0 lead early in the game. The Fleet were unable to get onto the board until the top of the fourth inning, when
Shi Cain hit a homerun to center field to tie the score.
Anna Taylor followed with a double and
Taylor Antley's single brought her home. The Fleet were forced to leave 3 runners on base, but ended the top of the fourth with a 2-1 lead. The one run lead for the Fleet didn not last long, when the Crusaders posted two runs in the bottom half of the same inning. The Fleet put together one more effort in the top of the seventh when Neeley and Birch each hit a single to center field, but the Fleet would be unable to bring them in. The Crusaders took the game 3-2.
Game 2: The second game was slower on both sides. Game two of the double header saw just a total of seven hits between the two teams and just one run. The Fleet managed to get players on base in almost every inning, but the Fleet's first hit wouldn't come until the fourth inning.
Shi Cain hit a single up the middle but was unable to make it home for a run. The Fleet wouldn't earn another hit until the seventh inning, when
Kelci Brown singled to left field and
Parker Birch singled to right field. Once again, the Crusaders managed to wrap up the inning before the Fleet could score but were unable to earn any runs of their own in the seventh. Tied at 0-0, the game was forced in to extra innings, where Belmont Abbey would earn one run in the bottom of the eighth, ending the second game of the day 1-0.
The Fleet step out of conference on March 6 to take on Columbus State University in Columbus, GA.
