Erskine Softball traveled to Columbus, GA, to play in the Red, White, and Blue Classic hosted by Columbus State University. The Fleet faced off against Lynn University and Columbus State University on Friday afternoon. The Fleet lost both games, falling 5-1 to Lynn and 11-8 against Columbus State.
vs Lynn: In the top of the first inning, Lynn posted the first run of the game and took an early 1-0 lead. Lynn would continue to increase their lead in the fourth and fifth inning, earning one run in each inning. Down 3-0, Erskine did not manage to get on the board until the bottom of the sixth. Allison Neely hit a single to first base and stole second. A fly out from Birch would advance Neeley to third, and a single through right field from
Shi Cain would bring her home for the Fleet's only run of the game. Their lead cut to two, Lynn would come out strong in the seventh inning and earn two more runs, securing the 5-1 win for Lynn.
Kelci Brown hit 2-4 on the game and Neeley and Garrison each hit 1-2.
vs Columbus State: The Fleet's second game of the day started off much better. The Fleet opened the first inning with two runs and one runner left on base. In the bottom half, Columbus State would manage to tie the score, earning two runs of their own with a little help from a Fleet error. Columbus State continued to build on their lead until the Fleet came storming back in the top of the fifth. Down 6-2, the Fleet scored five runs in the top of the fifth, taking a 7-5 lead. Bradley started the fifth inning with a single down the line and a single from Neeley and a Columbus State error would bring her in for the Fleet's first run of the inning.
Parker Birch's single to third base brought in Neeley and a home run from
Shi Cain brought in Birch. Belue would go on to earn a single that advanced Spires to second base and a sacrifice fly from
Chloe Hamilton brought Spires in for the Fleet's fifth run of the inning. The Fleet's 7-5 lead would not last long, as Columbus State would go on to post three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Erskine earned one more run in the top of the sixth, but after giving up two additional runs in the bottom half, the Fleet would be unable to earn any runs in the seventh, ending the game 11-8 in favor of Columbus State.Â
The second day of the Red, White, and Blue Classic will have the Fleet take on University of West Alabama and Columbus State on Saturday, March 7.
