Fleet Softball hosted USC Aiken in a non-conference double header on Saturday in Due West, SC. The Fleet took the first game in eight innings 2-1 but fell in the second game 12-6.
Game 1: The first two innings of the first contest remained scoreless for both teams. In the bottom of the third inning, the Pacers would help the Fleet get two runners on base and a single from Allison Neely would get bases loaded.
Parker Birch connected on a single to first base, bringing in
Taylor Antley for Erskine's first run. The Pacers ended the inning, forcing the Fleet to leave three players on base. Aiken was not able to post a run until the top of the seventh inning, where the Fleet would get two quick outs, hoping to finish the game in seven. USC got a runner on base with a little help from Erskine, and a single through center field would bring her in, evening the score 1-1 in the top of the seventh. Unable to earn a run in the bottom half of the inning, Erskine was forced to go to extra innings. Aiken got several runners on base, but a double play and a strike out would keep Aiken off the board in the eighth inning. In the bottom half, Erskine also managed to get two players on base. Birch stole third base, advancing herself into a scoring position, and a single through center field from
Faith Belue would bring her home and give Erskine a 2-1 victory over Aiken.
Game 2: The Fleet started strong in the second game. The Pacers walked in an Erskine runner for the Fleet's first score of the game, but a single to left field from
Anna Taylor would bring in two more runs in the first inning. Aiken matched those three runs in the top of the second, but the Fleet would post two more in the bottom of the second when
Chloe Hamilton hit one out of the park, bringing in
Hayden Bradley and advancing the Fleet lead 5-3. The Fleet would strike again in the third inning, where Bradley's single and a bad throw from the Pacers would allow
Megan Deal to put up another Fleet run. This run would prove to be the last of the game for Erskine, and Aiken would go on to post seven runs in the top of the fourth and an additional two in the top of the fifth, claiming a 12-6 victory over the Fleet.
The Fleet travel to Belmont, NC, to begin Conference Carolinas play in a double header against Belmont Abbey on Monday, March 2.
