The Fleet fell in three today to King University in a Conference Carolinas match up. After pushing the Tornado to extra points in the first set, King took over in dominating fashion to take the match 27-25, 25-14, 25-13.
The Fleet started strong with a quick 4-0 lead with
Francisco Pomar behind the service line and strong offensive play from
Jacob Whyte and
Jon Fuller. A quick run from King's Jack Sarnowski brought the Tornado back within one in a set that would remain close until the end. Although the score was tied 11 times throughout the set, the Fleet refused to give up their lead until late in the set when King pushed ahead 19-18. Strong serving from Erskine's Ben Janson and hitting errors by King put the Fleet back on top 24-23, but would be the last lead the Fleet would have. Three consecutive hitting errors from Erskine would boost King to the first set victory 27-25. The second and third set would prove the be less thrilling for the Fleet with the Tornado coming out strong in both sets. The Fleet would go on to accumulate just 10 kills for both sets combined. Erskine quickly dropped both the second and third set 25-14 and 25-14 respectively.
The Fleet leaned heavily on freshmen pin hitters
Jacob Whyte and
Edge Austin, each tallying over 20 attack attempts. Freshman
Jason Sall entered later in the match and was able to post two kills on four attempts.
