The Fleet dropped two games in Friday afternoon's double header lineup of the 2nd Annual Bearcat/Fleet Invitational. The Flying Flying lost a tight game to Carson Newman 5-4 before facing off with Concord University. Concord took the game 3-2 when the game was halted due to darkness.
vs. Carson Newman: Carson Newman started off strong scoring one run in each of the first three innings. It wasn't until the sixth inning when the Fleet came to life. With bases loaded,
Faith Belue stepped to the plate and connected on a single to advance all runners and bring in teammate
Parker Birch for an RBI. Bases still loaded,
Sydney McInnis followed with a single of her own, once again advancing all runners and bringing in
Katie Spires. Trying to score an additional run,
Hayden Bradley got out at home and Carson Newman was able to end the inning, forcing Erskine to leave two on base. The Fleet struck again in the bottom of the seventh which sent the game to extra innings. Two scoreless innings led to an exciting tenth inning, when Carson Newman scored two runs. The Fleet came firing back when Birch was able to bring in
Kelci Brown. This proved to be the last run for the Fleet, ending the game after the tenth inning 5-4.
vs. Concord: The Flying Fleet came out much stronger in the second game of the day. After giving up one run in the first inning, they were able to earn two of their own in the bottom half. Brown started the Fleet off string with a single to left field and Birch earned a single on a bunt which brought Brown home for a run.
Ellison Garren followed with a single of her own, bringing in
Allison Neeley for a second run. After a quick second and third inning, the Fleet lost their lead in the fourth when Concord was able to ring up two runs to bring their lead to 3-2. The game remained scoreless in the fifth inning and the game was called at the top of the sixth due to darkness, giving the Fleet a 3-2 loss.
The Fleet continue their play in the Bearcat/Fleet Invitational on Saturday with games against Young Harris University and Tusculum University.
