Due West, SC –
Danica Newton threw her first career no-hitter to lead Erskine to a 3-0 victory over Carson-Newman in the first game of a non-conference softball double header. The Eagles would win game two 4-2 to salvage a split.
Game OneIn the bottom of the first,
Reagan Davis would leaf off with a single to center and
Brittany Reynolds would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second. Davis would then score on a single by
Sydney Smith to make it 1-0. Smith would steal second and score on a double by
Lydia Trexler. The Fleet would add another run in the third to make it a three run game. The Eagles would get a one out walk in the fourth, but Newton would go on to retire the next 11 batters she faced to secure the no-hitter.
Trexler was 1-3 with a double and RBI for the Fleet, while Smith was 1-1 with an RBI and run scored. Davis, Reynolds,
Jacquie Hill, and
Baylee Browning also had one hit each. Newton (5-3) picked up the win allowing just four base runners in the complete game performance.
Game TwoIn the top of the third, Shon Jordan would hit a solo home run to put Carson-Newman up 1-0.
Brittany Rhinehardt would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single. Reynolds would then single down the left field line and Smith would single to score both runners and give Erskine the lead. Carson-Newman would score three runs in the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead and hold off a late rally by the Fleet to take the victory.
Rhinehardt was a perfect 3-3 with a run scored to lead the offense. Smith and
Jill Sprague both finished the game 2-3, while Smith drove in both runs.
Kaylin White (9-3) took the loss allowing two runs on one hit in one inning of relief work.
