Newton Throws No-Hitter as Fleet Split With Carson-Newman

Due West, SC – Danica Newton threw her first career no-hitter to lead Erskine to a 3-0 victory over Carson-Newman in the first game of a non-conference softball double header.  The Eagles would win game two 4-2 to salvage a split.

Game One

In the bottom of the first, Reagan Davis would leaf off with a single to center and Brittany Reynolds would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance her to second.  Davis would then score on a single by Sydney Smith to make it 1-0.  Smith would steal second and score on a double by Lydia Trexler.  The Fleet would add another run in the third to make it a three run game.  The Eagles would get a one out walk in the fourth, but Newton would go on to retire the next 11 batters she faced to secure the no-hitter.

Trexler was 1-3 with a double and RBI for the Fleet, while Smith was 1-1 with an RBI and run scored.  Davis, Reynolds, Jacquie Hill, and Baylee Browning also had one hit each.  Newton (5-3) picked up the win allowing just four base runners in the complete game performance.

Game Two

In the top of the third, Shon Jordan would hit a solo home run to put Carson-Newman up 1-0.  Brittany Rhinehardt would lead off the bottom half of the inning with a bunt single.  Reynolds would then single down the left field line and Smith would single to score both runners and give Erskine the lead.   Carson-Newman would score three runs in the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead and hold off a late rally by the Fleet to take the victory.

Rhinehardt was a perfect 3-3 with a run scored to lead the offense.  Smith and Jill Sprague both finished the game 2-3, while Smith drove in both runs. Kaylin White (9-3) took the loss allowing two runs on one hit in one inning of relief work.
