Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet split a nonconference softball double header with Newberry College Wednesday afternoon, with Erskine winning game one 6-5 and the Wolves winning game two 3-2.
Game OneIn the bottom of the first
Reagan Davis would draw a leadoff walk and advance to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Brittany Reynolds.
Sydney Smith would then blast a two run home run to put Erskine up 2-0. Davis would have a RBI double in the fifth to increase the Fleet lead to three. The Wolves would score two runs in the sixth to make it a one run game, but Erskine would take advantage of a Newberry error to add three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, the Wolves would scratch three runs across but the Fleet would hold on for the win.
Jacquie Hill was the lone Erskine player with two hits, while Smith had two RBI's and Davis and
Kaitlyn Kerley each had a hit and RBI.
Danica Newton (2-1) picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits in 5.1 innings of work and
Candace Fitch (2) recorded the save getting two strike outs in the final inning.
Game TwoNewberry would score two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead in game two. In the bottom of the second,
Julia Cole would lead off with a walk and then steal second and later scored on a wild pitch to make it a one run game. In the bottom of the fourth,
Chandler Crawford would single to right center to lead off the inning.
Mia Blochviak would pinch run for Crawford and steal second. She would then score on a double by
Brittany Rhinehardt to tie the game at two. The Wolves would reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth on a two out pinch hit home run by Briana Clontz. That would be all Newberry would need as they held on for the win.
Rhinehardt was 2-3 with a double and RBI for the Fleet, while Reynolds was 2-4.
Lydia Trexler, Christine Lone, Cole, and Crawford each had one hit. Fitch (4-4) took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five in seven innings of work.
