Box Score 2 Wilson, NC – The Flying Fleet scored three runs in the seventh inning of game one and five runs in the final three innings of game two to complete a three game sweep of Barton in Conference Carolinas baseball action.
Game OneTrailing 1-0 going into the final inning,
Tyler Phillips would reach base on a fielder's choice, to put the tying run on base with two outs.
Kyle Heiss would then single up the middle and
Chris Moody would single to left to score Phillips and tie the game at one. Heiss would then score on a wild pitch to give Erskine the lead.
Sam Cothran would follow with a double to right center to score Moody and give Erskine a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs would not be able to answer in the bottom half of the inning and Erskine would take the victory.
Cothran was 2-4 with a double and RBI to lead the Fleet offense, while Moody added a single and run driven in.
Alex Calvert (4-1) picked up the win allowing one unearned run and struck out a career high nine batters in the complete game performance.
Game TwoBarton would score a run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Neither team would be able to score over the next six innings. Heiss would lead off the top of the eighth with a double to left center and then steal third. He would score when Cothran reached base on a Barton error ro tie the game at one. The Bulldogs would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a run to regain the lead. The Fleet were once again down to their last out in their final at bat when
Destin Nichols hit a home run to left field to tie the game at two. In the bottom half of the inning Barton would load the bases with one out, but
Brandon Hester would come in and get a strike out and a ground out to get out of the jam.
In the top of the 10
th, Heiss would lead off with a single and Moody would lay down a sacrifice bunt to put him in scoring position. Cothran would fly out to right and Heiss would advance to third.
Chase Watts would single through the right side to score Heiss and give Erskine the lead. After Watts stole second, he would score on a double by pinch hitter
Guner Sellers to make it a 4-2 game.
Henry Faunce would finish out the scoring with a RBI single and Hester would retire the Bulldogs in order to secure the series sweep.
Heiss was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Fleet, while Watts was 2-5 with a RBI. Faunce also added two hits in the win. Hester (1-0) picked up the win pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a hit and striking out three.
