The Conference Carolinas top-ranked Erskine men's volleyball team handed the 4th ranked Mount Olive team its first loss in the last five matches with a win in 3 sets (25-23,25-14,27-25).
The first set was a battle between the two teams with only a one point margin until Erskine's Senior, Neal Stanley, got a kill out of a timeout called by the Trojans at 22-23 for the Fleet to take their first two point lead of 24-22. Mount Olive responded with a kill, but then the match ended with a picture perfect kill from Freshman, Johannes Liepert.Â
Senior, Michael Michelau went on a serving roll, with an astounding 4 total aces, taking the Fleet to a quick 7-0 run before UMO Head Coach, David Heller, put in a substitute and got the next point. The Fleet then went up 20-7 before the Trojans had a chance to catch up. However, it was just not enough as the Fleet kept a significant lead through the end of the set. Senior setter, David Grandy commented on this by stating that they "played really well as a team, I think we did a great job serving and keeping them out of system."Â
Erskine started off the third set with the 3-0 led until Mount Olive came back and took a slight lead. The lead shifted back and forth throughout the set and even ended up with a tied score going into the final points of the match. The match ended with a kill from Roberto Perez Vargas who had the match-high kills of 18 and only 3 errors total.
Omar Melendez ended the match hitting .304 totaling 11 kills and 4 errors. "We excelled against one of the best teams in the conference," stated Melendez. Neal Stanley had another great performance contributing 6 kills with no errors, 6 digs also adding 2 blocks. Michael Schneck posted 11 digs while Grandy help lead the offense with 38 assists.
"If we continue to play like this then we will have a really successful season," said Grandy. The Fleet are back in action this Tuesday, March 1st at 7pm against the Tornados of King University.Â
