Due West, SC – The Erskine softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from Mars Hill Saturday, winning Game one 4-3 in eight innings and game two 2-1.
Game OneMars Hill would score a run in the top of the first inning to take an early lead over the Fleet. In the bottom of the fourth,
Chandler Crawford would get hit by a pitch and
Brooke Rhinehardt would pinch run for her.
Lydia Trexler would then single to right field to put runners at first and second, and then both runners would steal to move into scoring position.
Jacquie Hill would lay down a sacrifice bunt to score Rhinehardt and tie the game at one. The Lions would respond in with a run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. Down to their last at bat,
Mia Blochviak and
Reagan Davis would lead off with back to back singles.
Brittany Reynolds would lay down a sacrifice bunt and Blochviak would score when the second baseman dropped the ball sending the game into extra innings. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth,
Julia Cole would score on a single by Hill to tie the game and Hill would advance to third on the play.
Britton Young would hit a ground ball to the first baseman and Hill would slide into home ahead of the tag to score the winning run.
Hill was 1-3 with two RBI's for the Fleet, while Young was 1-4 with an RBI. Davis, Reynolds, Trexler, and
Sydney Smith had one hit each.
Kaylin White (2-2) picked up the win allowing one run on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief work and striking out two batters.
Game TwoWith the score tied at zero in the second inning, Hill would single through the left side of the infield, then with one out Young would blast a home run to right field and put Erskine up 2-0. The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the seventh when Mars Hill scratched a run across, but
Candace Fitch came in and shut the door.
Young was 1-2 with a home run and two RBI's to lead the Fleet, while Hill, Davis, Smith, and
Kaitlyn Kerley each added one hit apiece. White (3-2) picked up her second win of the day allowing one run on seven hits and striking out one in 6.2 innings of work. Fitch (1) piched up her first save recording the final out of the game.
