Gaffney, SC – Erskine scored two runs in the top of the ninth to break a 7-7 tie and held on to win 9-7 over Limestone in the Conference Carolinas series opener.
Erskine would take the early lead when
Trevor Wood led off the game with a single and then
Sam Cothran would hit a home run to left field to put the Fleet up 2-0. Erskine would add another run in the second on an RBI single from Cothran to make it 3-0. The Saints would then score four unanswered runs to take a one run lead into the sixth inning. In the top of the sixth,
Chase Watts would single to left and score on a double by
Tyler Phillips to tie the game up.
Brett Silas would then single to left to score Phillips and giver Erskine the lead again. An RBI double by
Chris Rave and RBI single by
Henry Faunce would make it a 7-4 game. Limestone would score a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth inning to tie the game up at seven.
Destin Nichols would lead off the ninth with a single and
Chris Moody would pinch run for him. Watts would then triple to left center to score Moody and put the Fleet back in the lead. Watts would then score on a sacrifice fly by Phillips to make it a two run game. The Saints would not score in the bottom of the ninth to give Erskine the win.
Cothran was 3-5 with a home run and three RBI's and Watts was also 3-5 with a triple and three runs scored. Wood, Faunce, and Phillps each added two hits for Erskine.
Joe Johnson (2-1) picked up the win allowing one run on three hits and striking out one in two innings of relief work.
