DUE WEST, SC - Erskine Women's Volleyball coach Heather Vahjen knew that her team would be out-sized in a matchup with the Pirates of Armstrong State.  When coupled with 29 errors in the game, compared to only 6 for the Pirates, the outcome was not what the Fleet desired.   

"When you have a size disadvantage, you can't afford to make errors", stated Vahjen.  

The Fleet lead the Pirates in kills, 37-31, but Erskine provided too many points to Armstrong via the error.  The Pirates were able to win the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16).  In the 1st and 2nd sets, the Fleet hung around before the Pirates would make a run to win the sets.  The Fleet were led by Freshman Payton Duncan who achieved a double-double for the match with 14 kills and 10 digs.  Sade Mendez contributed 8 kills and 8 digs while Kristen Dodge dished out 37 assists.  

Coach Vahjen was impressed by the way her team, especially Freshman, showed up against high level competition.  "Our freshman came out and performed against that  level of competition.  These are the types of games that they grow as players.  It's also the type of game that we can look at and show them what they need to continue to improve on", said Vahjen.  

The Fleet (4-5, 2-0) return to Conference Carolinas play next Friday at Converse College.  Game time is set for 7 pm.
