Fleet Win 1st Conference Match After Slow Start

Franklin Springs, GA - The Erskine Women's Volleyball team traveled to face the Lions of Emmanuel College for their first Conference Carolinas match of the 2015 season.  They would eventually soar to a 3-1 victory to start conference play 1-0.

Another slow start plagued the Fleet, as the Lions claimed a 25-16 victory in the 1st set.  Emmanuel boasted a lofty .423 hitting percentage in the 1st set compared to .107 for the Fleet.  The teams would trade places in the 2nd set.  The Fleet improved to a .250 hitting percentage compared to .042 for Emmanuel, and Erskine would take the set by a score of 25-16 to even the match.  The Fleet would continue to shake off early nerves in the 3rd set with a .340 hitting percentage to take a 25-20 and 2-1 advantage.  The 4th set would be the most competitive set of the match, but the Fleet would prevail 25-23 to take the match 3-1.

The Fleet were lead by Kelly Sullivan with a game high 15 kills at an incredible .542 hitting percentage.  Freshman Payton Duncan contributed 12 kills, while Kristen Dodge continues her solid play with a game high 37 assists.

"The first conference match of the year is always a tough one, but I thought we did a great job of battling through the early nerves", said Coach Vahjen when asked about her teams performance tonight.

The Fleet return to Belk Arena this Friday, September 18th at 7 pm to face Pfeiffer University in their 2nd overall Conference Carolinas match and Conference Carolinas home opener.
