Hilton Head Island, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (6-9) wrapped up their three game spring break trip to Hilton Head Island with an 8 to 1 loss to #6 ranked Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) this morning. The Fleet went 0-3 on the road trip, losing to #16 Flagler College on Wednesday 9 to 0 and Francis Marion University 6 to 3 on Thursday.
In today's match, the Fleet's lone point came at #2 doubles.
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and
Caroline Yodice (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Bishop England School) edged SCAD's Carolina Viteri and Anastasia Castro 8 to 6.
The Fleet lost two close singles matches.
Mikaela Bennett (Calgary, Canada, National Sports HIgh School) and
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) both won their first sets before falling in three sets at #3 and #4 singles.
The road trip did not begin well on Wednesday. Flagler won all nine matches, including all six singles matches in straight sets.
In Thursday's contest, Erskine narrowly lost to FMU. Erskine won one doubles match and just missed winning at #1 doubles.
Mika Goyette (Montreal, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) and Bennett fell 8 to 6 to Julia Graf and Samantha Koeliker.
In the singles matches, Polk and Yodice earned the Fleet's two other points. Polk overcame a tough 7-6 lost in the second set to win an equally close tie-breaker set 12-10.
Erskine travels next weekend to play conference foes Barton College and the University of Mount Olive on Friday and Saturday respectively.
