Sumter, S.C. – Erskine's conference tournament title streak has come to end at ten straight. The #2 Pfeiffer University Falcons (19-3) defeated the #4 Erskine Flying Fleet (10-11) 5 to 0 this morning in the Championship Match of the Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Championship Tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
The Falcons won two close well played matches at #2 and #3 doubles to sweep the doubles matches and put the Fleet in an early 3 to 0 hole. Pfeiffer's Mylene Petitpas and Noemi Perez Principa edged the Fleet's #3 doubles pair of
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) and
Rebecca Weaver (Lake City, SC, The Carolina Academy) 8 to 6 while Olivia Nelms and Hannah Watson clipped the Fleet's
Sarah McDonald (Round O, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) and
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) 8 to 5.
Nelms and Watson won their singles matches at #1 and #4 to clinch the tournament title and a berth in next week's NCAA Regional Tournament.
Erskine had won the previous ten conference tournament titles dating all the way back to 2005. Prior to that, Barton was the last school to win conference tournament title back in 2004.
Guthrie and Polk were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The title match was postponed to this morning due to inclement weather yesterday.
