Burlington, NC – Belmont Abbey scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh and held on to defeat Erskine 6-2 in an elimination game in the Conference Carolinas baseball tournament Sunday.
Erskine would take an early lead, as
Brandon Overstreet would single to left center and advance to third on a Crusader error. He would then score on a sacrifice fly by
Houston Ison to give the Fleet the 1-0 lead. Belmont Abbey would tie the game up in the bottom of the second, but Overstreet would hit a solo home run to right field to give Erskine the lead again. The score would remain 2-1 until the bottom of the second when the Crusaders would take advantage of two Erskine errors to score five runs and take the 6-2 lead. The Fleet would not be able to score in their final two at bats, losing 6-2.
Overstreet led the Erskine offense going 3-4 with a home run, RBI, and scoring both Erskine runs.
Logan Galliher and
Sam Cothran also added two hits each.
Austin Gambrell (5-2) took the loss allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out seven in six innings of work.
The Fleet will finish their season next weekend as they host Wingate University in a three game series starting Friday.
