Sumter, S.C. – #4 Erskine Flying Fleet (10-10) toppled #1 Limestone Saints 5 to 4 in the Semi-final Round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Championship Tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
At the end of three well played doubles matches, Erskine trailed Limestone 2 to 1. Limestone's Marian Pinate and Alexandra Boulbin edged Erskine's
Mika Goyette (Montreal, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) and
Mikaela Bennett (Calgary, Canada, National Sports HIgh School) 8 to 6 at #1 doubles to give the Saints the early advantage.
Only one of the six singles matches was decided in two sets. Erskine's
Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) triumphed at #5 singles in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) to tie the match at 2 to 2.
The outcome for the other five matches was not decided until the decisive third set. After winning their first sets 6-4, Erskine's
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and Goyette both stumbled in their second sets but rebounded to claim the tie-breaking third set.
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) rallied after dropping her first set to win the next two. Erskine won four of the six singles matches to win the match 5 to 4.
Erskine nearly made it a clean sweep in the singles matches. Erskine's
Sarah McDonald (Round O, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) and Bennett won their opening sets but lost their match in the third set in the tie-breaker 7-6 (7-5).
Erskine advances to face #2 Pfeiffer University in the championship match on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. In the event of rain, the championship match will be played Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.
