Box Score Burlington, N.C. – #5 King University Tornado (18-25) capitalized on nine walks and three Fleet fielding errors to defeat Erskine (19-22) 21 to 5 in 5 innings in the Quarterfinal Round of the Conference Carolinas Softball Championship Tournament.
With the score tied 4 to 4 entering the fourth inning, Erskine allowed six straight King batters to reach base, four via base on balls, as King plated seven runs. King tacked on ten more runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of an Erskine fielding miscue.
As a group, four Erskine pitchers surrendered 21 runs, 15 earned, on 14 hits. King hit three home runs: two 3-run shots and a grand slam.
For the Fleet, Erskine scored five runs on ten hits.
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School),
Chandler Crawford (Williamston, SC, Palmetto High School),
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) and
Karen Hawkins (Belton, SC, J.L. Mann High School) each had two hits apiece. Crawford smoked a solo shot in the fifth inning for her seventh home run of the year.
With the loss, Erskine falls into the loser's bracket and faces #2 University of Mount Olive at 3:00 p.m. UMO was upset by #7 seed North Greenville University 9 to 4.
