Erskine Softball | Smith returns as Assistant Coach

DUE WEST, S.C. – The Erskine Softball program announced the addition of Sydney Smith as an assistant coach on Thursday.

Smith, a 2018 graduate of Erskine and four-year starter for the Flying Fleet, returns to Due West after spending the previous three years as the head coach at Ware Shoals High School.

"I am thrilled to welcome Sydney back to Erskine as assistant coach. I'm so excited about what she brings to the table for our team and our program," Erskine Softball Head Coach Alleen Hawkins said.

A native of Honea Path, South Carolina, Smith starred during her playing career for the Fleet, starting all 178 games and hitting over .300 in three of her four seasons. A three-time all-Conference Carolinas selection, including two-time 1st Team honoree, Smith amassed 165 hits and drove in 119 runs in her career.

"I'm so happy to be back in Due West and contributing to my college program as a coach," Smith said.

Smith was a 2018 John Cowan "Jake" Todd Award winner, which is given to the most outstanding Erskine student-athlete based on sportsmanship, leadership, athletic ability, character, and academic standing.

The Fleet will be looking to continue on their success from the 2026 season, where Erskine improved its win total by five games and returned to the Conference Carolinas Softball Championship after missing out the prior year.
