Box Score 2 Wilson, N.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (13-17, 5-5) scored two runs in the 8
th inning to win the first game of today's doubleheader against the Barton College Bulldogs (9-19, 2-10). The Fleet failed to make it a sweep, dropping the nightcap to the Bulldogs 5 to 3 in Conference Carolinas softball action at Jeffries Field.
Game One
Erskine's
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) hurled her second straight complete game, giving up one run on just two hits over eight innings. Newton struck out eight while issuing four walks to earn her fourth win of the season.
Newton's only mistake came in the first inning. Barton's Megan Kelly led off the game with a solo home run. After that Newton pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit.
Playing international rules in which a runner starts at second base, the Fleet pushed two runs across the plate in the eighth inning.
Mia Blochviak (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central High School) singled to put runners on the corners and
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) followed with another single to score the Fleet's first run. After stealing second, McCarson scored on
Sydney Smith's ground ball.
Erskine forced the extra frame, tying the game in the sixth inning.
Brittany Reynolds (Seneca, SC, Seneca High School) led off the inning with a walk then stole second. Reynolds moved to third on McCarson's ground out to second and scored on Smith's sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Barton's Liz White also pitched a complete game, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits in taking her ninth loss of the season.
Game Two
The Fleet could not make it sweep, losing the second game 5 to 2. The Fleet tallied both their runs in the first inning off four straight hits. McCarson and
Smith (Seneca, SC, Seneca High School) both delivered rbi singles.
The Fleet threatened several more times, banging out eight more hits but could not push a run across the dish.
Chandler Crawford (Williamston, SC, Palmetto High School) and Smith both had three hits each to lead the Fleet at the plate.
The Bulldogs bounced right back tying the game in their half of the first and taking the lead in the third inning. The Bulldogs capitalized on two walks and a couple of wild pitches to plate two runs in the first inning.
In the third inning, Bass gave the Bulldogs some breathing room, smashing a two-run homer that put the Bulldogs up 5 to 2.
Erskine's
Karen Hawkins took the loss, giving up five runs on six hits over 2.2 innings.
Barton's Hayley Baxley earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 shutout innings. White tossed the final four innings to earn her first save of the season.
Erskine plays two against Mount Olive on Friday starting at 2:00 p.m.
