Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – Junior
Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) hit a pair of home runs as the Erskine Flying Fleet (18-20, 10-6) took two games from the visiting Pfeiffer University Falcons (22-21, 9-9) in Conference Carolinas softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex. Erskine won game one 4 to 3 on a wild pitch then won the nightcap in convincing fashion 7 to 1.
Game One
After Long crushed her first home run of the day to tie the game at 3 to 3,
Karen Hawkins (Belton, SC, J.L. Mann High School) singled for the second time in the game. With
Brooke Rhinehardt (Clover, SC, Clover High School) pinch-running for Hawkins, Rhinehardt moved to second on a ground ball then advanced to third and home on back-to-back wild pitches.
Erskine scored their other two runs on solo home runs by
Brittany Reynolds (Seneca, SC, Seneca High School) and
Sydney Smith (Seneca, SC, Seneca High School). Reynolds hit her second home run of the year in the third inning while Smith launched her solo shot in the fourth inning.
Junior
Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) picked up the win in relief of
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School). White pitched the seventh inning to earn her third win of the season. Newton went six strong innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits. She struck out two and did not issue a walk in the contest.
Pfeiffer's Sam Jarmusch took the loss, her eighth of the year, giving up four runs on seven hits. She fanned three while not issuing a free pass.
Game Two
Erskine broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, erupting for five runs. Head Coach
Alleen Hawkins sent two pinch hitters to plate, both hitters driving in runs. Freshman
Gabby Keisler (Gilbert, SC, Gilbert High School) delivered an rbi single to right then Long followed with a two-run blast to dead center field to put the Fleet up 4 to 0.
The Fleet tacked on three more runs, all unearned, due to Pfeiffer fielding miscues.
The seven runs were more than enough for Erskine pitcher
Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School). Fitch limited Pfeiffer to just three hits. Her only mistake came in the sixth inning, surrendering a solo home run to Jessica Jackson. Fitch whiffed eight in the complete game victory.
Erskine pounded out thirteen hits, led by a three-hit performance by senior
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School). McCarson was a perfect three for three while Reynolds,
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School), and
Brittany Rhinehardt (Clover, SC, Clover High School) contributed two hits each.
Erskine travels to play Emmanuel College on Monday then wraps up their regular season with two games on Tuesday against conference-leading Limestone College.
