Box Score 2 Due West, SC – The 14
th ranked Flying Fleet completed their second straight Conference Carolinas series sweep defeating Belmont Abbey 4-2 and 15-1 Saturday afternoon at Grier Field.
Game OneBrandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would lead off the bottom of the first with a double and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter). He would then score on a single by
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) to give Erskine (17-1, 8-1) the early lead. The Crusaders would answer in the top of the second. Weston Clarke would lead off with a single and later score on a single by Josh Genthe to tie the game. In the bottom of the third, Smith would blast a solo home run to left to give the Fleet the one run lead. With two outs and no one on,
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would get hit by a pitch and then
Destin Nichols (Tampa, FL, Berkley Prep) would hit a home run to left center to make it a 4-1 game. Belmont Abbey (11-8, 8-4) would score a run in the sixth on a RBI double by Clarke to make it a 4-2 game. That would be all the Crusaders would get as Erskine held on the win.
Lorenzo Wright, Conor Kwalwasser, and Clarke each had two hits to lead the Crusaders on offense. Matt Davenport (2-3) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits and striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.
Smith led the Erskine offense going 203 with a home run and two RBI's, while Nichols was 1-2 with a home run and two runs driven in.
Luke Crumley (Cleveland, GA, University of Georgia) (5-0) allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out nine in the complete game performance to pick up the win.
Game TwoBelmont Abbey would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Genthe would lead off with a single and score on a single by Nick Nunziato. The Fleet would respond with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would lead off with a walk and score on a double by
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) to tie the game. Lollis would score on a single by Overstreet and Smith would single to score Overstreet. Erskine would explode for eight runs in the fourth to blow the game wide open and cruise to the victory.
Nunziato led the Crusaders at the plate going 3-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Tyler Byrnes (2-1) took the loss allowing eight runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Overstreet was 3-5 with a double and four RBI's and Nichols came off the bench and had two hits and four runs driven in. Smith, Dix, and
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) all added two hits in the win.
Landon Dickerson (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) (1-1) picked up the win allowing just one hit and striking out four in 2.2 innings of relief work.
