Erskine Bats Silent; lose 2-0 and 8-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Jefferson City, Tenn. – The Erskine bats could manage just seven hits this afternoon as the Carson-Newman University Eagles (26-8) shutout the Erskine Flying Fleet (12-16) twice today, 2-0 and 8-0, in non-conference softball action at The Vick.

Game One

In a classic pitcher's duel, Carson-Newman edged Erskine 2 to 0 in game one.  Both pitchers were dominant as the two teams combined for just six hits in the contest.

Carson-Newman capitalized early on two Erskine fielding miscues for one run then strung two hits together to plate their second tally.   In the first inning, Erskine committed back-to-back fielding errors allowing Haley Taylor, who singled earlier, to score.

Two innings later Carson-Newman tacked on an insurance run.  Taylor singled again and Elyana Siebert followed with an rbi double off Erskine's Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School).  Newton went the distance, giving up the two runs, one earned, on four hits.  She struck out two and walked two in taking the tough loss.

For Carson-Newman, Sarah Howard stifled the Fleet bats, surrendering just two hits, both singles, over seven innings.  Howard struck out five and did not issue a walk.  It was Howard's fifth win of the year.

Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) and Brittany Rhinehardt (Clover, SC, Clover High School) had the two hits for the Fleet.

Game Two

Despite threatening to score in almost every inning, the Fleet lost game two 8 to 0 in five innings.  The Fleet had runners in scoring position in every inning except the fourth but Carson-Newman's Danielle Kranz worked out of trouble each time.

The Fleet's best opportunity to score came in the second inning.  With one out, Jill Sprague (Charlotte, NC, West Mecklenburg High School) and Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) hit back-to-back singles and Kathryn Windham (Manning, SC, Lawrence Manning Academy) worked the count to draw a walk to load the bases.  Kranz retired the next two Fleet batters with a strikeout and a pop up to end the threat.

Kranz went the distance for her tenth victory of the season.  She allowed five hits, all singles while striking out seven and walking two.

Erskine will use spring break to travel this Thursday and Friday to play Barton and Mount Olive respectively.
