Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (12-14) scored 23 runs on 22 hits in a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Judson College Eagles this afternoon at the Erskine College Softball Complex. The Flying Fleet won the opener 7 to 4 and followed it up with a 16 to 1 in the nightcap that was called after five innings.
Game One
Erskine overcame five defensive miscues that led to four Eagle runs to win the first game 7 to 4. Erskine starting pitcher
Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) did a tremendous job pitching out of two bases loaded jams in the second and third innings, allowing just one unearned run in each inning, before giving way to
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) in the fourth inning.
In the fourth inning, Newton relieved White after Judson capitalized on two more Fleet errors to take a 4 to 2 lead. Newton held the Eagles hitless over the next 3.1 innings, striking out 10 while walking one to earn her third win of the season. White pitched well, giving up just three hits over 3.2 innings pitched. She struck out two and walked two.
The Fleet finally got to Eagle pitcher Jana Springfellow in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 6 to 4 lead. Erskine's
Gabby Keisler (Gilbert, SC, Gilbert High School) delivered the big blow with a two-run double that just missed clearing the left field fence. Springfellow went the distance, surrendering seven runs, four earned, on seven hits. She struck out six and walked five.
Keisler led the Fleet at the plate going 2 for 4 with two runs batted in.
Chandler Crawford (Williamston, SC, Palmetto High School) also had two hits along with a run batted in.
Game Two
In the nightcap, Erskine exploded for six runs in both the third and fourth innings. Keisler again provided the big hits, crushing a three-run home run in the third inning and following it up with a solo blast in the fourth. For the day, Keisler went 4 for 7 with two home runs, a double, and six runs driven in.
Crawford also delivered a three-run shot and senior Ericka McCarson and freshman Sydney Smith had three hits each.
In the circle, freshman pitcher
Karen Hawkins (Belton, SC, J.L. Mann High School) had a no-hitter through four innings. In the fifth, Hawkins lost the no-hitter after Judson's Leandra Glass hit a solid single to right. She later scored on teammate's Mackenize Gilchrist's double to right-center, costing Hawkins the shutout. Hawkins went five innings, giving up the one run on two hits while striking out six and walking one. For Hawkins, it was her third win of the season.
Erskine plays their next three opponents on the road starting with the Eagles of Carson-Newman University this Monday. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m.
