Box Score Milledgeville, GA – The second ranked Flying Fleet pounded out 14 hits, including eight for extra bases to take an 11-8 victory over Georgia College and State University Wednesday afternoon.
With two outs in the top of the second and trailing 1-0,
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would single up the middle and
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would blast his first home run of the season over the left field wall to put Erskine (26-3) up 2-1. The Bobcats (14-13) would answer with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, Georgia College would put runners on second and third with no one out.
Noah Hinzman (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood Christian) would come into the game and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases. He would then retire the next three hitters to shut the Bobcats down.
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) and
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would lead off the top of the fourth with back to back doubles to cut it to a three run deficit. Cothran would then hit a home run to left center to tie the game.
Andrew Kozak (Sidney, NY, Hudson Valley CC) would then blast his first home run of the season to left to give the Fleet a one run lead. Erskine would add three runs in the fifth to make it a 9-5 game. Maivelett would hit his second two run home run of the game in the eighth to push the Fleet lead to six. Georgia College would score three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Fleet would hold on for the victory.
Cothran was a perfect 3-3 with a home run and two RBI's, while Maivelett was 2-4 with two home runs and five runs driven in. Galliher finished the game with three hits and Kozak had two. Hinzman (2-0) picked up the win allowing two runs on four hits and striking out a career high 10 batters in six innings of relief work.
