Box Score 2 Central, S.C. – In a doubleheader against Southern Wesleyan University Warriors, the Erskine Flying Fleet (10-14, 4-4) won the first game 3 to 2 in 8 innings then lost the second game 3 to 1.
Game One
Freshman
Sydney Smith (Seneca, SC) singled home the go-ahead run in the 8
th inning and pitcher
Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School) tossed 2.2 shutout innings for her fifth win of the season.
Erskine broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth inning. Freshman
Jill Sprague (Charlotte, NC) led off the inning with a walk and later scored on Brittany Reynolds' RBI single. The Fleet caught a break when SWU committed an error allowing
Reynolds (Seneca, SC) to score.
In the sixth, SWU scored two runs to tie the game and force Erskine pitcher
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) from the game. With one out, the Warriors strung together three straight singles followed by a sacrifice fly.
Playing international tie-breaking rules where a runner starts the inning at second base, Smith lined a single to center to score Reynolds. The Fleet threatened to add another run but SWU pitcher Lucy Wolff got Gabby Keisler to fly to center to end the inning.
After the Warriors sacrificed their runner to third in their half of the eighth, Fitch got the final two outs with a pop up and a strikeout.
Smith and Jacquie Hill each had two hits to lead the Fleet attack.
Game Two
In the nightcap, SWU's Allison Parker limited the Fleet to one run on three hits to earn her fourth victory of the season.
The Fleet scored their lone run in the third, taking advantage of a hit by pitch. After Sprague got hit by a pitch to start the inning,
Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) singled to get her to third. Sprague scored on Reynolds' sacrifice fly.
The Warriors scored all their runs in the second inning, chasing Fitch from the game. After back-to-back singles, Callie Wayne cleared the bases with a triple. After getting an out, Parker lined a shot down the left field line for the Warriors' third run and end Fitch's day in the circle. Fitch took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in an inning and a third.
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) and Reynolds had the other two hits for the Fleet.
Erskine returns home to host non-conference foe Judson College for two games this Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
