Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) fired a no-hitter in game one and freshman
Jill Sprague (Charlotte, NC) smacked a three-run home run in the nightcap as the Erskine Flying Fleet (9-13, 3-3) steam rolled the visiting Bobcats of Lees-McRae (3-23, 0-2) 9 to 0 and 9 to 1 in a softball doubleheader this afternoon.
Game One
Newton was nearly perfect, allowing just three baserunners, in the Fleet's 9 to 0 win that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule. For Newton, it was her second win of the season.
Erskine scored nine runs on nine hits, led by freshman
Chandler Crawford (Williamston, SC) and Sprague. Crawford went 2 for 3 at the plate with a pair of doubles, driving in two runs and scoring two others. Sprague went 2 for 2 with two singles and drove in two runs.
Sophomore
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) returned to the lineup today after missing the first part of the season due to injury. The right-handed outfielder pinch hit in the fourth, delivering a two-run single.
Game Two
In the nightcap, the Fleet bats banged out eight hits to score nine runs while freshman pitcher
Karen Hawkins (Belton, SC) held the Bobcats to one run on one hit. Freshman
Gabby Keisler (Gilbert, SC) got the offense rolling in the first with a two-run double. Keisler finished 2 for 3 with 3 rbis. In the third inning, Sprague launched her first home run of the season to put the Fleet up 7 to 1. Freshman shortstop
Sydney Smith (Seneca, SC) also had two hits, scoring twice and driving in a run.
For Hawkins, it was her first collegiate complete game victory. The Bobcats got their one run off Hawkins in the first. Sarah Stallings drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. LMC's Amanda Decker delivered a base hit to score the Bobcats' lone run of the day. It was Hawkins second win of the year.
Erskine goes on the road to play at Southern Wesleyan University this Tuesday. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
