Due West, S.C. – The weather was perfect but the outcome was not as the Erskine Flying Fleet (5-5) were overwhelmed 9 to 0 by the Lakers of Clayton State University (5-5) this afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Complex.
The Flying Fleet found themselves in unfamiliar territory as the Lakers captured all three double matches.
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) and
Caroline Yodice (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Bishop England School) lost the tie-breaker game to lose at #2 doubles 9 to 8.
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) and
Rebecca Weaver (Lake City, SC, The Carolina Academy) were also narrowly defeated 8 to 5 at #3 doubles.
The Lakers claimed all six singles matches, including five matches in straight sets. At #3 singles,
Mikaela Bennett (Calgary, Canada, National Sports HIgh School) forced her opponent to three sets. After overcoming a first set defeat to win the second set 6 to 4, Bennett was clipped 10 to 8 in the tie-breaker to drop her match.
Erskine will look to snap their two match losing skid this Saturday against non-conference foe Newberry College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
