Box Score Central, SC – The ninth ranked Flying Fleet held off a late rally by Southern Wesleyan to defeat the Warriors 6-5 Monday night to complete a sweep of the Conference Carolinas series.
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would lead off the game with a double to right field. He would then advance to third when
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) flew out to right and then scored on a wild pitch to give Erskine (21-2, 11-1) a 1-0 lead. With one out in the second,
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would double to center field and then scored on a double by
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS). Lollis would advance to third in a wild pitch and then scored when
Houston Ison (High Point, NC, Rockingham CC) reached on a Southern Wesleyan (5-18, 2-10) error to increase the lead to three.
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, Univ. of South Carolina) would lead off the third with his fourth home run of the series to make it a 4-0 game. The Warriors would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one run game.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Lollis would blast his first home run over the left field fence to push the Erskine lead back to two. Southern Wesleyan would answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 5-4 game. The Fleet would take advantage of three Warrior errors in the eighth to score a run and make it a two run game again. In the bottom half of the inning, Southern Wesleyan would have runners at second and third with no one out. Left handed pitcher
Terry Hall (Anderson, SC, Westside HS) would come into the game and strike out the left handed batter.
Joe Johnson (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood High School) would then enter the game and strike out two batters to end the rally. The Warriors would again rally in the bottom of the ninth. Having already scored a run to make it a one run game,
Kyle Foster (Greer, SC, Blue Ridge HS) would come into the game with the bases loaded and one out. He would strike out the next two batters to end the game.
Lollis was 3-5 with a double, home run, and two RBI's to lead Erskine at the plate. Overstreet, Smith, and Cothran each added two hits for the Fleet.
Cody Dysart (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood HS) (1-0) picked up the win allowing one run on two hits and striking out one. Foster (1) got the save, striking out two in two-thirds of an inning of work.
