Box Score 2 Central, SC – The 11
th ranked Flying Fleet hit seven home runs in two games to sweep a Conference Carolinas double header from Southern Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
Game OneBrandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would put Erskine (20-2, 10-1) up 1-0 in the top of the first when he led the game off with a solo home run. Southern Wesleyan (5-17, 2-9) would score a run in the bottom half of the inning and one in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Their lead was short lived as
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, Univ. of South Carolina) would lead off the fourth with his first of three home runs on the day to tie the game at two.
Destin Nichols (Tampa, FL, Berkley Prep) would hit a one out single and the
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would blast a home run over the left field fence to put the Fleet up 4-2. Smith would lead off the fifth with his second solo home run in as many innings to increase the lead to three. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Smith would double to left center and then score on a single by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to make it a 6-2 game. The Warriors would score an unearned in the bottom of the seventh but it wouldn't be enough.
Smith led the Fleet at the plate going 3-4 with two home runs, a double, and two RBI's while Cothran was 1-3 with a home run and two runs driven in.
Luke Crumley (Cleveland, GA, University of Georgia) (6-0) picked up the win allowing two earned runs on seven hits and striking out nine in his second straight complete game performance.
Game TwoErskine took a 2-0 lead in top of the first on a two run single by Smith. Southern Wesleyan would score five unanswered runs to take a 5-2 lead after three innings. In the top of the fourth,
Richard Dix (Clemson, SC, Daniel HS) would hit a one out single and Nichols would follow with a two run home run to make it a 5-4 game. In the top of the fifth, Overstreet and
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) would both single with one out, bringing Smith to the plate. He would blast his third home run of the day over the left field fence to give Erskine the 7-5 lead. Erskine would add seven runs over the next four innings to take a 14-5 victory.
Smith again led Erskine at the plate going 3-5 with a home run and seven RBI's. Cothran was 3-5 with an RBI, while Overstreet, Wilson, and
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) each added two hits in the victory.
Zach McAllister (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) (2-0) picked up the win allowing just two hits and striking out eight in 6.2 innings of relief work.
The two teams will conclude their series Monday with a single game starting at 6:00 PM
