Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (5-4, 5-1) lost to the Saints of Limestone College (1-3, 1-0) 6 to 3 this afternoon, snapping the Fleet's 48 consecutive regular season conference match win streak.
It is the first conference loss by the Flying Fleet in five years. The last conference team to beat the Flying Fleet was Queens University back in 2010. Queens University won the regular season match up 5 to 4 but the Fleet came back to defeat the Royals 5 to 3 in the conference tournament championship match.
Erskine fell behind 2 to 1 after the doubles matches.
Sarah McDonald (Round O, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) and
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) won their #2 doubles match 8 to 3. At #1 doubles,
Mika Goyette (Montreal, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) and
Mikaela Bennett (Calgary, Canada, National Sports HIgh School) were clipped 8 to 6 while
Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) and
Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) also lost a close match at #3 doubles 8 to 5.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets with the Fleet prevailing in two of them. Guthrie and Bennett won their two singles matches at #3 and #4 respectively.
At #6 singles, Polk overcame a first set loss to win the second set 7 to 5. The tie-breaker set was equally as close with Limestone's Julia Moreira winning 10 to 7.
Erskine hosts non-conference foe Francis Marion University this Saturday starting at noon.
