Box Score Due West, SC – A day after losing on an extra inning walk off hit, the 11
th ranked Flying Fleet returned the favor to defeat Brevard College 9-8 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon.
In the top of the first, Hunter Donaldson would single to right and advance to third on a double by John Slade and then score on a wild pitch to give the Tornados a 1-0 lead. Erskine (18-2) would respond in the bottom half of the inning when
Joey Wilson (Charleston, SC, USC Sumter) doubled down the left field line and then scored on a single by
Destin Nichols (Tampa, FL, Berkley Prep). The Fleet would add two more runs in the second and one in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Brevard (10-12) would score a run in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it a one run game.
In the bottom of the seventh Wilson would draw a walk to lead off the inning and advance to third on Smith's second double of the game. Wilson would score on a single to center field by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) and Smith would score on a sacrifice fly by Nichols to make the score 6-3. The Tornados would explode for five runs in the top of the eighth to take the lead 8-6. They would keep the lead going into the bottom of the ninth. Wilson would lead off with a double down the left field line and Smith would follow with a walk.
Houston Ison (High Point, NC, Rockingham CC) would lay down a sacrifice bunt and reach on the Brevard error to load the bases. Drake Black would come in for Brevard and retire the next two batters, but
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would single to center to score two runs and tie the game. The Tornados would not score in the top of the 10
th, giving Erskine a chance to win it in the bottom of the inning. After the leadoff hitter was retired, Overstreet would send the first pitch he saw over the left field fence to give the Fleet the win.
Smith led the Fleet at the plate going 3-4 with two doubles and three runs scored, while Overstreet was 2-5 with a home run and three RBI's.
Noah Hinzman (Greenwood, SC, Greenwood Christian) (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win pitching two scoreless innings of relief.
