Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (1-3) split two games this afternoon with the visiting Chowan University Hawks (2-2) in non-conference softball action at the Erskine Softball Complex. In the first game, the Fleet blew a seven run lead, only to rally for four runs in the seventh for a walk-off 13 to 12 win. In the nightcap, Chowan University scored four runs in the final two innings to seal a 7 to 2 victory.
Game One
After allowing a run in the first, it appeared Erskine pitcher
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) would cruise to an easy victory behind an offense that produced eight runs through the first five innings. Through five innings, Newton had allowed just one run on one hit.
Meanwhile the Erskine batters banged out twelve hits, including three home runs, to capture an 8 to 1 lead through the first five innings. Sophomore
Lydia Trexler (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) hit a solo blast in the second to put the Fleet on the board and freshman
Chandler Crawford (Williamston, SC) hit her first two collegiate home runs to knock in five runs. Crawford finished a perfect 3 for 3 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
In the sixth and seventh innings, Newton ran into trouble, thanks to three Erskine fielding miscues that resulted in ten runs, seven unearned. Chowan's Katlyn Brummett provided the big blow in the seventh with a grand slam home run following an Erskine error that prolonged the inning. Erskine trailed 12 to 9 going into their final at-bat.
In the seventh, Erskine rallied for four runs to win the game 13 to 12. Senior
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) led off the inning with her first home run of the season driving Chowan pitcher Alora Lincoln from the game. Following a two-run double by freshman
Brittany Reynolds (Seneca, SC), freshman
Sydney Smith (Seneca, SC) lined the ball down the line to score the game-winning run. Reynolds went 4 for 5 with 2 runs scored and two driven in and McCarson finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored and two driven in.
Freshman
Karen Hawkins (Belton, SC) picked up the win in relief of Newton. For Hawkins, it was her first collegiate win.
Game Two
Hawkins started game two and, after surrendering three runs in the first two innings, settled down to fire three scoreless innings. Chowan got to Hawkins in the last two innings, scoring two runs in each inning, to secure the 7 to 2 victory.
Chowan pitcher Kayla Robins struck out 11 over six innings in earning her first win of the season.
For the Fleet, Reynolds led the Fleet with two hits and driving in one.
Erskine travels to Florence, South Carolina, on Wednesday to play Francis Marion University in a doubleheader.
