UNG beats Erskine in season opener 5-4

Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (0-1) could not repeat last year's performance, losing 5 to 4 to the Nighthawks of the University of North Georgia in non-conference women's tennis action at the Erskine College Tennis Courts.

UNG turned the tables on Erskine this season.  Last year Erskine won the final singles match to win the match 5 to 4.  This season UNG won the ninth match to secure the 5 to 4 victory.

Erskine found themselves trailing 2 to 1 after the three doubles matches.  Senior Mika Goyette (Montreal, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) and sophomore Mollie Polk (Round O, SC, Pinewood Preparatory School) edged the UNG opponent 8 to 6 for the Fleet's lone doubles point.

The two teams split the six singles matches, giving UNG the 5 to 4 victory.  Goyette, junior Sarah McDonald (Round O, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) and junior Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) won the three singles matches for the Fleet.  Goyette and Elliott won in straight sets while McDonald rebounds after losing her first set to win the next two.

Polk and freshman Rebecca Weaver (Lake City, SC, The Carolina Academy) pushed their opponents to three sets but could not pull out the victory.  Polk lost her third set in the tie-breaker.

Erskine goes on the road this Saturday to play NCAA Division I opponent Gardner-Webb University.  The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
