Box Score Due West, SC – The 16
th ranked Flying Fleet took advantage of two Limestone errors to defeat the Saints 2-1 in the opening game of the Conference Carolinas series Friday afternoon.
In the bottom of the first,
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would lead off the game by reaching second base on a throwing error.
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Overstreet and then a ground out by
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) would score the run and give Erskine a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth,
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) would hit a one out single and then steal second. With two outs,
Destin Nichols (Tampa, FL, Berkley Prep) would reach on another Saint throwing error to score Galliher and make it a 2-0 game.
Austin Gambrell (Belton, SC, Spartanburg Methodist College) dominated the Limestone hitters, allowing no hits through six and a third innings. In the top of the eighth, Austin Marcellus would draw a one out walk. He would steal second and advance to third when the throw went into center field. A ground out by Alex Oleszkowicz would score Marcellus and cut the Erskine lead to one. That would be all the Saints would get as Erskine held on for the victory.
Kyle Booth had the lone Limestone hit, going 1-4 with a double. Jameson McGrane (0-4) took the loss allowing no earned runs on three hits and striking out seven in 7.2 innings of work.
Overstreet, Lollis and Galliher each had one hit for Erskine. Gambrell (3-0) picked up the win allowing one unearned run on one hit and striking out five in a complete game performance.
The two teams will conclude their series with a double header starting at noon Saturday.
