Aiken, S.C. – With the weather playing havoc on their schedule, the Erskine Flying Fleet (1-3) finally returned to the court today, losing to the USC-Aiken Pacers (6-2) 5 to 4 this afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action.
Due to inclement weather, the Fleet's last three matches have been postponed. The Fleet last played back on Valentine's Day, defeating Belmont Abbey 9 to 0.
In today's match, the Fleet played well in all three doubles matches but only won one match. Senior
Mika Goyette (Montreal, Quebec, Ecole Secondaire De Mortague) and freshman
Mikaela Bennett (Calgary, Canada, National Sports HIgh School) edged the Pacers' pair Sarah Bemos and Kayla Calvert 9 to 8 at #2 doubles. At #1 doubles, sophomore
Sarah McDonald (Round O, SC, Colleton Preparatory Academy) and junior
Haley Elliott (Simpsonville, SC, Mauldin High School) lost a close match 8 to 5.
In the singles matches, Erskine prevailed at the top three spots. McDonald was winning 3 to 2 when Nadine Tusiama had to retire due to injury. At #2 singles, Goyette truimped in straight sets while
Miranda Guthrie (Suwanee, GA, Home-schooled) won in three sets, winning the third set 10-5.
Erskine lost two of the singles matches in straight sets. At #4 singles, Bennett clipped Calvert in the first set 7-5 but was edged in the next two sets 6-3 and 6-4.
Erskine returns home for their next two matches. This Saturday the Fleet hosts conference foe King University starting at 1:00 p.m.
