Box Score Due West, SC – The Flying Fleet scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a three run game to take a 8-1 victory over Salem International in the opening game of the non conference series.
In the bottom of the second,
Sam Cothran (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would lead off with a double and
Tanner Lollis (Williamston, SC, Palmetto HS) would sacrifice him to second. After
Rodney O'Neal (Dublin, GA, Middle Tenn. St.) was hit by a pitch,
Brandon Overstreet (Stuart, FL, Herkimer CC) would single to drive in Cothran and give Erskine the lead. After a single by
Zach Smith (Lexington, SC, White Knoll HS) loaded the bases, O'Neal would score on a sacrifice fly by
Logan Galliher (Taylorsville, NC, Alexander Central HS) to make it a two run game. In the bottom of the fourth, Cothran would single with two outs and then score to push the lead to three. Salem International would score a run in the fifth to cut the lead back to two. In the bottom of the sixth,
Hanlon Maivelett (Aiken, SC, Aiken HS) would get hit by a pitch and later score on a single form Lollis to make it a 4-1 game. The Fleet would take advantage of a Tiger error in the eighth and score four runs to make it a 8-1 game.
Smith led the Fleet at the plate going 3-5 with an RBI, while Lollis was 2-2 with an RBI. Overstreet finished 2-5 with two runs driven in and
Brandon Wooten (Taylors, SC, Blue Ridge HS) and Cothran added two hits each.
Wes Schuler (Spartanburg, SC, USC Sumter) (1-0) picked up the win allowing one run on one hit and striking out six in five innings of work.
Zach McAllister (Simpsonville, SC, Hillcrest HS) (1) picked up the save striking out six and not allowing a hit in the final four innings of work.
