Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Fleet upset host USC-Aiken, 3-0!

Aiken, SC - The Erskine Women's Volleyball (23-6) team stunned the Pacers of USC-Aiken tonight 3-0 to advance to the NCAA DII Women's Volleyball Southeast Regional Semifinals.  USC-Aiken came in as hosts and the top ranked team in the Southeast Region with a 27-6 season record.

In the opening set, the Pacers tried several times to lengthen their lead, but the Fleet answered each time to even the score.  After rallying late in the set, Erskine tied the set at 23-23.  A Marissa Mayfield kill and a Kelly Sullivan service ace clinched the first set for the Fleet, 25-23.  The Fleet would maintain a small edge in the first part of the 2nd set before a 4 point run with Kendall Kirk serving would give them a commanding 22-15 lead.  They would go on to win the 2nd set 25-17.  In the 3rd set, the teams would battle back and forth with ties at 12-12 and 18-18.  From there, with Marissa Greenough serving, the Fleet would go on a three point run culminated by a Mayfield kill to give the Fleet a 21-18 lead.  The Pacers could only manage two more points and their attack error sealed the upset victory for the Fleet. They would win the third set 25-20, and the match 3-0.

Overall, the Fleet outperformed the Pacers offensively attacking .293% compared to .159%.  The Fleet got contributions from several players in several different areas.  Kristen Dodge and Payton Duncan both registered double-doubles.  Dodge finished with 44 assists and 12 digs, while Duncan had 17 kills and 11 digs.   Kelly Sullivan also reached double digit kills with 10 and Mayfield, Sami Harting, and Greenough had 7 kills each.  Defensively, besides Duncan and Dodge, Kirk and Greenough also collected double digit digs.

The Fleet victory means the they will advance 2nd round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament and will face #4 ranked Carson-Newman who defeated #5 Armstrong St. earlier today 3-1.  The match is scheduled for 7:30 pm tomorrow, Saturday, December 5th, at USC-Aiken.
