Box Score 2 Florence, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet opened their 2014 campaign with two loses in the Francis Marion University Invitational Tournament despite back-to-back double-doubles posted by senior outside hitter
Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School).
Against Shorter University in the first game, Erskine won the first set 25 to 22 but were clipped in the next three sets 25 to 21, 25 to 23, and 25 to 18. Bullock led the Fleet with a game-high 14 kills and 12 digs. She also had two service aces. Sophomore setter
Kristen Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) also tallied a double-double with a team-high 15 digs and 36 assists. Freshman
Catherine McAlister (Charleston, SC, Bishop England School) began her collegiate career in grand fashion with 11 kills and 6 blocks.
Shorter had a trio of players earn a double-double. Elizabeth Dowd had 14 kills and 10 digs while teammate Jasmine Crook knocked down 13 kills with 11 digs. Setter Dena Pierce handed out 16 assists along with 14 digs.
Local rival Lander University got the better of the Flying Fleet winning 3 to 0 in the second game of the tournament. Bullock again posted a double-double with 10 kills and a team-high 17 kills while McAlister knocked down a team-high 11 kills. Dodge also tallied her second double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs.
Lander was led by Sydney Tracy with a game-high 14 kills while teammate Kendall Korte had a double-double with 11 kills and a game-high 19 digs.
Erskine will play Mars Hill College and host Francis Marion University in day two of the FMU Invitational Tournament.
