Caitlin Bullock (Lexington, SC, White Knoll High School) exploded for a season-high 18 kills as the Erskine Flying Fleet deflated previously unbeaten the Tornado of Brevard College 3 to 0 (25-11, 26-24, 25-23) this afternoon in the first game of the Columbus State Invitational Volleyball Tournament at the Lumpkin Center.
Bullock led the Fleet offensively in each of the three sets, including blasting 9 kills in the decisive third set. She also contributed 9 digs and block on the defensive side.
In the first set, Erskine pounded out 15 kills, four each by Bullock and junior
Kelly Sullivan (Wellington, FL, Wellington Community High School), on just 31 attempts in route to a 25 to 11 drumming of Brevard. The Flying Fleet hit a season-high .452 for the set.
To Brevard's credit, the Tornados bounced back in the next two sets, holding early leads in both sets. In the second set, the Tornados grabbed an early seven point advantage at 13 to 6 only to see the Fleet rally to tie the game at 16 to 16. Bullock knocked down two kills and a block while Sullivan had two blocks to lead the Fleet charge.
Brevard had the first attempt at game-point but Erskine's
Sade Mendez (Gardena, CA, Redondo Union High School) drilled a kill to tie the game. After which the Flying Fleet turned to their defense to win the game blocking the next two Brevard attack attempts to win the set 26 to 24. Sullivan and
Rissa Mayfield (Durham, NC, Riverside HIgh School) combined on the first block while Mendez blocked Brevard's Erin Barr for the game-point.
In the third set, Brevard again took an early lead at 14 to 10 on a kill by Hannah Elmore. Following an Erskine timeout, the Flying Fleet rallied to tie the game at 19 to 19 on a kill by Bullock and won the game on back-to-back attack errors by Brevard.

Kristen Dodge (Duncan, SC, Byrnes High School) earned her fourth double-double of the season with 33 assists and 13 digs. She also contributed 2 service aces and 2 blocks.
For Brevard, Whitney DeMoss had 11 kills while Elmore finished with 9 kills.
With the victory, Erskine climbs to 4-3 overall while Brevard earns their first blemish at 4-1.
On Saturday Erskine plays Lenior-Rhyne at 12:30 p.m. and the University of Montevallo at 4:30 p.m.
