Erskine blasts four home runs in sweep of SWU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (13-17) blasted four home runs in a sweep of the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University (16-15).  Erskine won the first game on a walk-off home run by Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) 4 to 3 and the nightcap 4 to 2 on home runs by Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) and Taylor Fernandes (Lincolnton, GA, Lincoln County High School).

Game One
Trailing 3 to 1, Erskine scored two runs in the fifth to set up McCarson's heroic shot in the seventh inning.  Fernandes led off the inning with her third home run of the season.  Later in the inning, Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) singled home Candace Fitch (Cherryville, NC, Burns High School), who reached after being hit by a pitch, for the tying run.  The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when McCarson launched a solo shot to left-center to win the game.

FreshmanDanica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) picked up the win, her sixth of the year.  Newton went the distance, giving up three runs on three hits.  She struck out four while issuing just one walk.

Game Two

The Flying Fleet again used the long ball in the second game to earn a 4 to 2 victory.  Long blasted a two-run shot in the first inning and Fernandes added her second home run of the day in the second.  Erskine added an insurance run in the fourth on a pass ball.

Sophomore Kaylin White (Columbia, SC, White Knoll High School) allowed two runs, both unearned, on two hits over six innings.  She struck out three and allowed three walks.  SeniorKatherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) pitched the final inning to earn her third save of the season.

Long led the Fleet at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a home run and two runs batted in.  Fernandes finished 1 for 1 with the home run as she was walked her next two plate appearances.

Erskine travels to Jefferson City, Tennessee, on Monday to play Carson-Newman University in two games.  First game starts at 2:00 p.m.
