Box Score 2 Due West, S.C. – The Erskine Flying Fleet (11-17) dropped two games to archrival Anderson University (29-9) this afternoon in non-conference softball action at the Erskine College Softball Complex. Erskine lost the first game 4-0 then the second game 11-2 in 6 innings.
Game One
Through five innings, Erskine's
Danica Newton (Mt. Pleasant, SC, Wando High School) was locked in a pitching duel with Anderson's Augie Pena. Anderson's Rebecca Martin led off the fifth with a solo home run. Anderson tacked on another run when Jessica Neidigh doubled home Bri Cason with two outs.
Anderson added two more runs in the seventh off Newton when Molly Child connected for her 10
th home run of the season.
Newton went six and two-thirds giving up four runs on 9 hits. She whiffed eight and yielded just one walk.
Offensively Erskine struggled against Pena who limited the Fleet to just two hits.
Jacquie Hill (North Augusta, SC, North Augusta High School) and
Ashlyn Hicks (Caycee, SC, Brookland-Cayce High School) both singled off Pena. After Hicks singled, she advanced to second on a wild pitch. Erskine had two chances but Pena worked out of the jam.
In the sixth, Erskine caught a break when
Ericka McCarson (Travelers Rest, SC, Travelers Rest High School) reached on an Anderson fielding error. Again the Fleet could not capitalize on the scoring opportunity.
Pena went the distance, striking out 12 and did not issue a walk.
Game Two
Anderson scored 11 runs in the nightcap, including 7 runs in the third inning, in earning the 11 to 2 victory. In the third inning, Anderson banged out six hits, including two home runs, one a grand slam, in scoring seven runs.
Erskine scored a single run in both the first and third inning. In the first inning,
Christine Long (Greer, SC, Greer High School) singled home Hicks. In the third, McCarson launched her second home run of the season.
Katherine Mulzer (Donalds, SC, Dixie High School) took the loss for the Fleet going just an inning and a third, giving up two runs on three hits.
Katelynn Howser picked up the win, giving up two runs on four hits over three innings.
Erskine will host Southern Wesleyan University this Saturday in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1:00 p.m.
